Summer care for dogs

Dogs are especially prone to heat sensitivity, so it is crucial for an owner to know how to prevent heat stroke, a condition where a dog’s body can no longer fight high temperatures, and also recognize the signs of an overheating pup.

Prevention tips:

  • Water: Always have plenty of water available for your dog. Whether your dog is running around outside or lounging indoors, it is crucial that they always have clear access to water.
  • Car: Car rides can be a fun way to spend time with your dog while going about your day, but they can also be deadly if you leave your pup unattended. Cars trap heat, so a seemingly warm day can turn a car’s temperature scorching in just minutes.
  • Walks: Depending on the weather, adjust the intensity and length of your dog’s outdoor activity to keep them safe. Also, avoid prolonged asphalt exposure, as the hot pavement can burn paws.

Early signs of heatstroke:

  • Heavy panting
  • Quick breaths
  • Difficulty balancing
  • Bright red gums

If you believe your dog is experiencing heat stroke, immediately try to cool them down and call your veterinarian. The condition, if not properly treated, can be fatal.
