Adoption Protocol

Welcome to our Specialized Adoption Service – established to continue placing pets with minimal risk but maximum love to adopters and their potential pets.

During COVID, we were forced to think “outside the box” when it came to maintaining NYS safety protocols in our workplace, and we came up with this idea…. kitty introductions inside the comfort and controlled environment of our adopter’s cars.

Could it be done? Would it work, we thought? Well, we learned that not only does it work- it works SO MUCH BETTER than how we previously managed our meet and greets. And, with over 4000 curbside adoptions under our belt – we certainly proved that it worked well.

Therefore, when we moved into our Bedford Hills facility we wanted to incorporate the same cozy feelings into our process. Our personalized meet and greet rooms are fun intimate play spaces designed with kitties in mind. Since all of our pets are living the best lives in different fosters, they can be nervous if brought to meet you initially (and especially if we were to cage them). Our system allows them (AND YOU) to have fun, play and snuggle to minimize stress for everyone and maximize happiness. Your voice, your smells, with minimal distractions. And best of all, no time restrictions – relax and enjoy your new bff!

Still nervous? NO worries- your greeter will give you helpful tips on how to make the best of your meet and greet. If this is your first time adopting through us, talk to one of our staff or better yet contact one of our adopters – they will tell you that your are about to meet the best cat you’ve ever owned!

1. All adopters must first do an application online at https://rnrpets.org/adopt. If you are having difficulty submitting the form or you do not hear from us within 24 hrs. – please email us directly at rocknrescue1@gmail.com and we can email you an application.

2. Kittens under the age of 12 weeks MUST go home with a buddy cat or to a home with a young buddy cat already looking for a friend – NO EXCEPTIONS.

3. Once approved, you will receive an email, text AND a phone call from us to discuss the adoption. ONLY ADOPTERS READY IMMEDIATELY TO ADOPT SHOULD BE APPLYING.  If this is for pre-approval for a future adoption, please note this on the application. PETS CANNOT BE HELD FOR MORE THAN 48-72 HOURS.

4. If you are unsure if you are truly ready to commit to adoption, please do not place a cat on hold as this will affect the cat’s chances for adoption. If you have questions or concerns, let us help guide you before confirming.

5. ONLY AFTER WE HAVE SPOKEN, YOU CONFIRM in the text thread AND WE RECEIVE THE ADOPTION CONTRACT will an adoption hold go into effect. (This contract is only binding if you move forward with the meet and greet and leave with the animal).

6.  Now that your choice has been placed on hold for you, there is only one final step that needs to take place before you take him/her/they home! That is the MEET AND GREET! In your private group text thread, we will send you our address and schedule you for your meet and greet along with additional info about what your kitty will need for the travel home etc…. We will also answer any questions you may have prior to the meet and greet. The group text remains post adoption for any advice and is your lifetime hotline (we love happy updates!).

WHAT TO EXPECT WITH YOUR MEET AND GREET:

PLEASE UNDERSTAND THAT YOU WILL ONLY BE MEETING THE PET PLACED ON HOLD FOR YOU. We cannot put multiples on hold as that blocks those cats from being placed with other families. And remember 99% of our adopters say “yes” to their top choice in the first place as these are super social, happy, AMAZING pets.

WHEN YOU ARRIVE, we will meet you, ask for your carrier and we will bring it back to your designated room with the cat you requested for your meet and greet. Take your time to meet this new friend and get to know him/her/them. Once you decide this is the pet for you our staff will review the medical information and go over any questions you may have.

PLEASE NOTE: again, there is no browsing- we cannot bring up multiple cats for you to choose from unless it is a special adoption event where NO cat is put on hold prior to meet and greet.

TO BE BEST PREPARED FOR YOUR MEET AND GREET/ADOPTION, PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU HAVE READ THE FOLLOWING:

  • Cat Adoption Agreement – this must be completed prior to appointment.
  • Check list of items you will need for your new pet.
  • Cat Adoption Information Sheet- a guide to what to expect as your pet transitions; both medical and feeding guidelines, and suggested veterinarian options for wellness checks.
  • Article on Upper Respiratory Infections

After the Meet and Greet: What’s Next?

If you fall in love, you leave with your new buddy. If it is not a match, NO WORRIES! We will take the cat back inside, return your carrier, and then RNR will be in touch to custom search a better match.
