Cat licking fingers

Why does your cat lick you?

If you have a cat, you may occasionally be startled by the unfamiliar feel their scratchy tongue on you in the middle of a cuddle session or while you are simply sitting at your desk.  Cats will sometimes lick you but why?

It is actually quite normal for your cat to lick you and the different reasonings behind it might surprise you!

Reasons Why Your Cat Might Be Licking You

One reason that your cat may be licking you is because they are grooming you!  This often occurs when you are petting them.  They might ‘return the favor’ by cleaning you the way that they clean themselves.

Another reason your cat may lick you is because…you taste good!  Occasionally, the taste of your skin will be considered good to your cat.  If you’re sweaty, your cat may like the taste of the saltiness on your skin or, if you have any food on you, they may lick it off.

Your cat may also lick you because they want you to pay attention to them!  If you’re walking around or sitting at your desk, you may feel them start to lick your feet.  It is their way of letting you know that they are down there and that it’s a great time for snuggling!

When it May Become a Problem

If your cat is licking you or themselves a noticeable amount, you may want to take them to a vet.  This behavior can indicate a disorder of some sort or that something is wrong.  Your vet may have an idea about what is going on with them and can advise you on how you should proceed.  The most important thing is that your cat is healthy and happy!
