Settling in a New Furry Friend

Making sure that a new pet gets settled in comfortably and safely takes time and patience.  There are some things you can do to help make your new pet feel comfortable in their new home!

Things YOU Can Do

A great way to make your new pet feel safe and comfortable is by providing them with their own space. By designating a room or area in your home for them with everything they need, they can explore and make themselves feel at ease without being overwhelmed. You will want to include their litter box, food and water bowls, bed, and any toys that they have so that they have everything they need and can relax.

Consistency is key when it comes to settling in a new pet! If they are used to certain things like a brand of food or litter, or have already adjusted to a type of bed, then it’s best to keep these things the same when they are settling into a new home. The transition from an old home to a new one can be a stressful, anxiety-inducing experience. They have to get accustomed to a whole new space and environment so keeping a few things the same can be a big help in making them comfortable. Once they appear to have settled in, then you can slowly introduce new brands and items.

Allow your pet to explore at their own pace! They may get stressed out and overwhelmed if they’re forced to explore too much too quickly. It can be a lot for them to take in with new people, new furniture, new smells, new sounds, and more!

Let them get used to you! Hang around them as often as you can whether that be watching tv or reading near them, working while they’re in the same room, sleeping near them, or of course cuddling! It’s important that they adjust to your presence and become comfortable around you. It won’t take long for them to feel loved and secure!
